Lmao my diablo II exp disc exploded yesterday, and my name is Matt =) so wierd... i didnt get all my peices out yet but i have another disc drive on my comp so its all good.

My Diablo 2: LoD CD exploded today too!! I've found LOTS of ppl have had this happen too them on the net. My DVD-ROM broke as well, now I have to buy both a new DVD _AND_ a new Diablo 2 exp CD. Silly.

The main ingredient is gelatin powder. That’s just plain, unflavored Jell-O ("Knox” is a common brand for this). You can get it at a supermarket or resteraunt/baking supply place dirt cheap. The reason proper ballistics gel (as posted by Kevin Miller above) is so expensive is because it is specially manufactured for forensic testing, and so it’s chemistry is very precise. If you just want something to work with in an artistic capacity, you don’t need to go so far.

2 *basic* recipes:

Recipe #1 (Credit Dick Smith)
1 part pectin powder (used in making jams & preserves, shoud be in the same supermarket isle as gelatin)
1 part gelatin powder
3 parts boiling water (double boiler reccomended)
Stirr untill disolved. Makeup powder or other dry pigments can be mixed in to color the gel. A few drops of oil of wintergreen (from baking supply store) can be used as a preservative.

Recipe #2 (Credit Tom Burman)
20 grams gelatin powder
12 cc distilled water
100 cc glycerin (sometimes available at drugstores, check first-aid isle)
Let the mixture soak for about 45 minutes, then heat to 140.F in a double boiler, and pour into ziplock bags and lay flat to cool. The gel can be remelted for use with a microwave. Oil of wintergreen works as a preservative here too.

The recipes posted by Chris Curtis above should work OK also, although I’ve not tried them myself. You shouldn’t need the kinds of molds they describe. Just strong plaster molds w/ petrolium jelly as a sealer. The two downsides of any gelatin recipe will be (1) it is perishable like food, and so will be succeptable to decay & mold, and (2) it is water soluable. There are addatives that will alleviate the water soluabilty issue, but I’m not up to date on sources, I apologize.

If you want something similar in look and feel, but of a more permanent chemistry, there are other options: silicons (expen$ive, but better durability & flexion), and hot-melt vinyls (cheap, but they get the job done). www.smooth-on.com makes silicons that are now widely used for this sort of work. The hot-melt vinyls I’ve used in the past I got through Douglas and Sturgess at www.artstuf.com . They also sell the silicons.

Just Mixing ballistics gell doesn't mean crap. Ballistics gell must be properly calibrated to assure that the gellatin is as close to flesh as possible. Calibration should be a penetration of a bb measuring 8.5cm at 590 fps. Otherwise, ya have a big thing of crappy jello.

The tissue simulant utilized in FBI ballistic tests is Vyse ordinance gelatin. The mixture is 10%, by weight. The mentioned research shows that properly calibrated 10% ordinance gelatin is a reliable tissue simulant. Calibration of ballistic gelatin is verified by firing a .177 steel BB at 590 feet per second (fps), plus or minus 15 fps, into the gelatin, resulting in 8.5 centimeters (cm), plus or minus 1 cm, penetration (2.95" - 3.74"). During FBI tests, any gelatin blocks which fail the calibration test are discarded. Calibration results are not published due to the Pass/Fail nature of the test.

The gelatin is mixed in the following manner (assuming a 20 pound block is desired):

Weigh out two (2) lbs. of gelatin powder and place aside.

Weigh out 18 lbs. of hot 60° C (140° F) water in a plastic bucket. (Note: The FBI utilizes a scale which weighs to the nearest .01 lb).

Place 2.5 ml of Foam Eater in water.

Place approximately .5 ml. of oil of cinnamon into water (prevents fungus growth).

While utilizing a battery-operated drill with a mixing paddle attached, mix the water to the point of forming a whirlpool, but without introducing air into the mixture.

While the water is being mixed, slowly add the gelatin powder.

Pour the mixture into a clean mold pan.

Allow to stand at room temperature for approximately 4 hours.

Write date on small square of cardboard and place on top of mixture.

Place pan with mixture into refrigerator set at 4° C (39.2° F).

Allow to cure for 36 hours (note: larger blocks require longer cure time e.g. an 80lb block requires 96 hours to cure).

Blocks, over time, deteriorate and are temperature sensitive. Former FBI publications advocated utilizing blocks within 20 minutes of removal from the refrigerator (a general statement pertaining to ambient temperature indoors). Allowable time outside the refrigerator is, however, relative to the temperature of the test environment (e.g. a block removed from a refrigerator and maintained in a room at the same temperature as the refrigerator will retain its calibration significantly longer than one placed outside on a hot summer day). Note: some authorities believe mixing procedures may vary the consistency of gelatin. FBI studies indicate, however, that a block which displays the required level of penetration, within the required velocity range, is a “valid” tissue simulant.

The FBI Ballistic Research Facility conducts its tests in an environmentally controlled shooting laboratory. Blocks of gelatin are removed from the refrigerator and checked for calibration. Only valid blocks are used for testing. Blocks used in testing of conventional pistol ammunition are approximately 6.25" X 6.25" X 16". The initial block of gelatin used in a test is called the Primary Block. Each Primary block is utilized for a maximum of 5 shots, one in each corner, approximately 1.75" from the nearest edge, and one in the center. Tests conducted by the FBI indicate this placement of shots results in substantially the same penetration as single shots into virgin blocks of gelatin. Any shots which cross the wound path of previous shots are refired. Primary blocks are not utilized for more than 5 shots, to include any shots which are refired.

didn't even penetrate the gel. I was talking with my buddy the other day and he was talking about a formula that he knew about, it was something like any force you exert upon water 3 times that force is exerted back.. (or something)

Which would make sense for the bullets that you tested (even the bigger calibers) not to go deep enough to penetrate the gel.

I think that the only thing that would penetrate it if anything would have to be .22 subsonic.

It would be going slow enough and it would be small enough that it might just go deep enough to penetrate the gel.

Ballistics gel can be directley purchased from the FBI but it dosn't come cheap. home recipes are nothing like the actual Gel and i suggest if you seriously want quality Ballistics Gel be prepared to shell out a few bucks. I was also wondering if the team at mythbusters could possibly bust this myth. its been a rumor at the local swimming center for ages here it is:

a man preparing to dive into the pool was feeling game so he climbed the tower to the 10 meter platform. The jump was succesful but when he hit the water stomach first his stomach split and his organs were sent flying into the water. i highly doubt this myth is true but i think buster could use a dip.

How to Make Your Own Ballistic Gel

Ballistics labs within the FBI and law enforcement often use ballistics gel to test wound penetration. They use a special ordnance gelatin powder to make the gel to specific standards under carefully controlled conditions, and it is then calibrated for accuracy. We also wanted to use some ballistics gel for our Cheney Gunshot Experiment. We lacked the time or the facilities to prepare the gel to FBI standards, but we managed to whip up a reasonable homemade version in our kitchen.

We got our basic recipe and instructions by consulting a few different websites dealing with ballistics and firearms. Tactical Works has basic how to with clear photographs, and Firearms Tactical has more detailed step-by-step instructions. We used a simplified procedure from the SteyrScout.org site. Ideally we would have used gelatin powder made specifically for ballistics use, which is manufactured by Kind & Knox. However, the powder has to be special ordered in bulk and is expensive. We opted for two 8 oz. boxes of plain Knox gelatin off the supermarket shelf, which set us back about $8 each.

We used a basic formula of one pound of gelatin powder to one gallon of water. We mixed our gelatin in two batches using 8 oz. of powder and 2 quarts of water. After measuring out the cold water, we added the gelatin powder all at once. We stirred the powder in carefully, trying to moisten all of the granules without adding too much air. The mixture was the consistency of thick grits.

We set the gel mixture in the refrigerator to chill and hydrate (a process known as “blooming”) for two hours. We set the gelatin over a pan of water and heated it until it melted. A candy thermometer was used to make sure the gelatin mixture didn’t get hotter than 130 degrees. During the melting process, we stirred carefully to minimize air getting trapped in the gelatin.

The professionals use specially constructed 6” x 6” x 16” molds coated inside with silicone spray for easy release. We used 32 oz. Glad Ware containers and non-stick cooking spray. The gel was set to chill in the refrigerator for 36 hours before use. We carried it to the testing site in insulated containers and unmolded it before testing. Each of the blocks was cut in half, for a total of four blocks measuring about 7.5cm x 12 cm x 13.5 cm. If used in a clean setting, like a lab, blocks of ballistics gel can be recycled by melting them down and remolding them. However, ours got too full of dirt and wood splinters to be reclaimed.
