Last Exile

Just keep trying, keep on flying, I will be the light...

Last weekend I finished watching the anime series Last Exile . It was the best anime I've seen in quite some time, and I'd rank it just below Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop in my list of favorite shows.

The first thing that draws you into Last Exile is the setting. It takes place in an amazingly creative world which is a cross between the early 19th century and the future (think Master and Commander with anti-gravity engines). Against this backdrop two nations engage in a war, which is arbitrated by the mysterious Guild. The story focuses on Claus and Lavie, who are vanship pilots (a vanship is a small two-seat aircraft), and their adventures.

The story and character development is generally well done, although it takes awhile for the plot to get rolling. That's fine though, since the world is so interesting. My only major complaint about the series is that a number of plot elements are either underdeveloped or unexplained. This is especially prevalent near the end of the series. It feels like the creators had to rush to fit everything in 26 episodes. Even so, Last Exile is still a great series, with beautiful OAV-quality animation, and I highly recommend it to all anime fans.

Cool, I'll have to check that out after I finish Witch Hunter Robin, which seemed like a good series to watch alongside Buffy. I'm about halfway through, and Robin has been ok so far, but nothing outstanding. It looks like the big story arc is just getting underway though, so it may get better.

I concur about the last episode of Last Exile being a bit rushed. Should have been 2 or 3 episodes at least. Some of the Animation also seemed a bit off from the very high quality animation of the rest of the series, especially the departing shots of Exile in space and the Anatoray/Disith double planet. The shape of the double planet was wrong too. Both should have been egg shaped with the pointy ends toward each other.

I was also disappointed that the series did not give more hints that Anatoray and Disith were different planets that shared a common atmosphere. The geometry of the Grand Stream bothered me a lot until I figured this out about two thirds of the way thru the series. The whole plot made no sense at all until the double planet configuration was realized. The hints were so few that I doubt one person in a hundred caught on. Perhaps the Japanese version was kinder in that regard and the hints were just not translated into English.

There was no firm confirmation that Anatoray and Disith were double planets until two very brief and very rushed shots near the end of the last episode. One shot was a pan up from Disith that showed Anatoray directly overhead and the other was the poorly animated shot of the Anatoray/Disith double planet mentioned above.
